Entrelac knitting
Entrelac looks woven, but it is knitted. You work short-row triangles and rectangles that lean against each other, picking up stitches along the edge of the previous block. The fabric grows on the bias, so a scarf or cowl is a natural first object.
It asks for comfortable knit and purl, plus patience with turning. If that sounds like a stretch, knit a simpler scarf first, then open an entrelac pattern when you want the woven surface.
