Tips: What does a "Multiple of 17 sts plus 2" mean?

It means that there are always going to be two extra stitches at the end of the row to finish up the pattern. If you only repeat the pattern once across the row (like if you were knitting a swatch), you would be knitting over 19 stitches (17+2)

If you want to repeat the pattern across 5 times, you will need 87 sts --first you multiply 5 times 17, then add two.

If you want to repeat the pattern 15 times, you multiply 15 times 17, and then add two (257)

How about a "Multiple of 4 sts plus 1"?

It means the same thing. You repeat a multiple of 4 across the row, and then finish up with that last little stitch. The reason you are given this little math problem for each knitting stitch is so that you will cast on the right number of stitches.

Just thinking about it will drive your mind crazy. But if you take the time to knit up a few swatches you'll start to understand why this works. Many patterns, especially the more exotic lace patterns, need to close off the final edge so that they look nice.

Just try it, you'll see that it works.

French Lace: Pyrenees pattern - source: The Illustrated Dictionary of Knitting

First published in Britain around 1840, the pattern of this lace is dainty and suitable for the finest yarns.  I wanted to work this pattern through twice so I could see the full effect - so I had to use tiny needles and yarn to stay under 7".

Terms:  sk2tog po, means:  slip 1, k 2 tog, pass slipped stitch over

FOR SWATCH:

Using sport weight yarn and size #1 needles cast on 47 sts.

Work 1" seed st.  Work seed st on 5 sts, Pattern of 37 sts, and seed st on 5 st until you have worked pattern through twice.  Work 1" seed st.  Bind off in patt.

Fern Pattern: from mon tricot Knitting Dictionary Stitch Patterns and given in British terms - I changed it a little making "wrn to M1" into "YO".  Also, I wasn't really happy with the way the left edge and right edge weren't matching up as mirror images, for the second half of the swatch I experimented with ending the rows with sl 1, ssk, psso - but it wasn't all that much better.

This pattern would be totally cool as a raglan increase - stagger the ferns, one each side, and don't compensate with the decreases.  I think I'll try this in a baby layette set.

FOR SWATCH:

Using sport size yarn and #1 needles, Cast on 39 sts.  Work seed st for 1".  * Work seed st on 5 sts, work pattern on 29 sts, work seed st on 5 sts *.  Rep from * to * working pattern through 3 times.  On 3rd repeat of pattern work the center sts in stockinette after 1st row.  Work 1" seed st.  Bind off in pattern.

Pattern:  Takes multiple of 29
